Jazmine Sullivan

JazmineJazmine was born and raised in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Pam, her mother has been a backup singer in the past at Philadelphia International Records. At the age of five her father was selected to be one of the cities' Historic Strawberry Mansion curator. Her family later moved to the historic mansion. She is a 2005 graduate of Philadelphia High School for the Creative and Performing Arts where she was a vocal music major. Sullivan played the contralto in the children's choir and then in the years later, she was a singer in the adults choir. The exposure Sullivan had to secular music was at first limited "I did solos at churches and a person wanted me to sign to an evangelical label when I had turned eleven, however I wasn't at the point of doing that," she recalls. "Then when McDonald's had a competition for youngsters in the major cities I was invited to perform 'Accept what God Gives' on Showtime at the Apollo and the audience was very enthusiastic". Stevie Wonder sang her part at his 13th birthday. Sullivan was first signed to Jive Records at the age 15. As a teenager the label signed her to Jive Records. The label recorded her entire album there, but it didn't get made available for release. Sullivan was then eliminated by the label. She had a good working partnership and Missy Elliott. Elliott produced several of her songs, including "Backstabbers" and "Backstabbers," which was produced by Timbaland.
